The repair shop spoke too soon.
I went down there to collect Pearl, and after a number of attempts to boot her up, it was clear she still wasn't working properly. They took her apart again, poked around, and then said, "Oh, wait, the hard drive was dying, but upon closer inspection? It's the motherboard, too." They should've checked that in the first place!

Looks like I'm staring down the barrel on this one.

Oh, dear. Is that repairable, too?

Not a chance. She's had it.

And also a million kinds of FAIL.

*Sympathy* *fingers crossed they can fix this too*

They can't. That's what I mean by staring down the barrel. She's dead.

Oh, no. Are they still going to charge you for repairs on account of their negligence?

I would have owed them £150 if the new hard drive had sorted it, but I would have owed them £60 regardless what happened. So yes, I'm out £60 for the labor. Not much to be done about it.

Just for looking at it, though? (And, you know, not doing a very good job of it.) You wouldn't have had them undertake the labor of replacing the HD if you'd known that the motherboard was trash, and that does seem to be rather their fault and they ought to eat at least some of the cost.

Just. Argh. I'm so sorry this is happening.

Oh, damn. That's just cruel. Do you still have to pay for what they did to her, or just the basic fee, whatever that is?

Yeah, basic labor fee of £60.

Okay :/ That just sucks massively.

Also, something just ocurred to me, mainly, this: http://spiderine.dreamwidth.org/364536.html

Damn, I'm sorry this is getting thrown at you at such an inopportune time.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do. The newest twist in the plot is that my back-up FireLite external hard drive, which contains all of Pearl's data, can't rendezvous with James's laptop because it's not USB - it's FireWire! PC laptops don't have FireWire ports.

Well, shit. I've an old Powerbook lying around I'd offer you, but the screen's bust so I'm not sure how much good that would do you. :-(

Yeah, a functioning screen is sort of essential. But the thought counts *hugs*

Oh no! I'm really sorry to hear that.

The only suggestion I have, if you're looking for something cheap, is to pick up a netbook rather than a full-sized laptop. I bought one for about $200 online from Target, and while it's not perfect as your only computer, it's a lot cheaper than replacing a Mac.

Maybe I can convince somebody in my family that I need an early graduation present. I mean, I'm almost done with the Ph.D., and it would really help if I had a computer to work with. Well, I have James's, which is what I'm on now, but when he gets home from work? We kind of start to fight over it. And it's beginning to be a strain.

What fucktards. I'm sorry... :(

Lazy bastards, is more like it. They should have checked everything the first time around.
