Obama to order Guantánamo Bay prison closed

(It's good to see a heartening headline - because, frankly, all the silence and that abstaining vote in the UN resolution regarding the Israel/Palestine situation have been making me nervous. Not that it makes up for them, mind...)

Isn't it a great news? ^__^

Fuck if I don't agree. I can't even watch the news anymore, I can't understand how the world can keep quietly watching Israel's massacres of Gaza when everything from journalists to the thousands of voluntary doctors working there are screaming for help. Well, I intellectually know why, but that's not the same as understanding it. I never will. It's such a tragedy.

(but yay about Guantánamo!)

I can't understand how the world can keep quietly watching Israel's massacres of Gaza when everything from journalists to the thousands of voluntary doctors working there are screaming for help.

Neither can I. And the intellectual knowing doesn't really help at this point, I find.

(Amen.)

It's out of curiosity, but in this case, what do you consider to be intellectual knowing? How would you have them vote on the (new) UN resolution? I'm not so sure they could have differently, given the news.

(but hey, Guantanamo Bay)

I think that we're referring to historical events of an unpleasant nature (i.e. the Holocaust and other atrocities), or at least that's what I assumed psychedk meant by it and I was reinforcing that meaning. If I was mistaken, however, I hope she'll let me know! In any case, my thoughts are this: my own country has shown me what it means to be a major country/power/government behaving with disproportionate violence towards another country, and when I look at this situation, I see something eerily similar. Truth be told, the "intellectual knowing" reference aside, the religious implications at this point have nothing to do with the way the situation makes me twitch with each new report that emerges. I know that this is a sensitive issue, but my reaction is what it is. To the best of my knowledge, the UN resolution condemns a number of human rights violations on Israel's part. I'd love nothing more than to see the U.S. stop turning its face away where human rights violations are concerned (especially its own). To me, the abstaining vote looks...well, bad, to put it simply. Given the administration that's still technically in power, though, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

Fair enough. (This tends to be the one area in the news to which I am more intuned/sensitive than most.) And while I may or may not agree with your exact statement here, what I do know, is a) it is not entirely our administration saying yay or nay on this. b) at least according to the international news I've seen, it was not Israel who turned the Accords down or voted in abstinence. Nor is this the first time something of this nature's happened.

:sigh: It's complicated, is what it is. And no two people will quite agree on the needed outcome.

Yay! America, you're making me so proud! I wish Canadian politics would smarten up! Argh.

I'm sure all it'll take is time *hugs*

oh thank you! this is the first good news of 2009, to me.

One of the first pieces, definitely.

This made me smile. *dances*

To quote some person on ONT_P:

"LOOK AT THIS FUCKING PRESIDENT. FIXING SHIT."

WE CAN HAS DIGNITY NAU?

We recently had a subject in my extemp Speech/Debate stuff about closing Guantanamo. I'm glad to see a president actually doing what he said he was going to do during the election.

I do hope he plans on carrying out as many of his promises as are feasible from the start!

I'm cautiously optimistic on that one -- as much as some presidents would like to get a lot of their plans enacted, the bureaucracy tends to be a real constipator.

A president does the most in his presidency in the first 90 days.

I guess we're gonna see what Obama can do.
