Garlands: Words & Lithographs
Strength
ajodasso
Tracking down images of all the Chagall lithographs referenced by Tori Amos in "Garlands" is a task that I'd been meaning to take on for quite a while. There was a website out there once upon a time that had managed to dig up about half of them; however, it didn't include all the lyrics in its breakdown, either. Having tracked down all the images (with the exception of Greeting Card, as Chagall did many of those and there's no way of knowing which one Tori means), I give you:

"The Winged Painter is on uptown," I said
"Will you meet me to go?"
Washington Square
I'm racing there
to get you at
Noon,
oh the Nocturne noon
Isabella on the way there stops me
(I say) I can't stay today—
I'm off in flight Towards Another Light.
Rest.
Youth.
Washington Square,
I meet you there and we go.

now He's on the run
He's on the run
From this walking Greeting Card
and Chloe's Kiss,
The Wolf Pit,
The Wine Harvest,
and Philetas's Lesson
We're not his possession.
in Winter,
Trampled Flowers
in Winter

Lovers
,
Circus,
these Garlands—
The Blue Pirouette,
The Marriage,
The Mimosas,
Black Sun Over Paris
these Garlands—
The Little Swallow,
St. Paul from the Window,
from The Half-Open Window.

Eve Incurs God's Displeasure.
Passion.
Odysseus and Penelope,
Ulysses and Penelope,
The Festival,
In Hell.

He's on the run
He's on the run
From this walking Greeting Card
and Chloe's Kiss,
The Wolf Pit,
The Wine Harvest,
and Philetas's Lesson
We're not his possession.
in Winter,
Trampled Flowers
in Winter

Lovers
,
in Winter,
Trampled Flowers,
Lovers,
Bay of Angels

Circus,
these Garlands—
The Blue Pirouette,
The Marriage,
The Mimosas,
Black Sun Over Paris
these Garlands—
The Little Swallow,
St. Paul from the Window,
from The Half-Open Window.

in Winter,
The Winged Painter,
The Winged Painter,
Washington Square—
Let's go see a Day in May
from The Winged Painter.

He's my favorite artist alongside Vermeer, hands down.

thank you for putting this together; these are lovely.

No problem! It drove me nuts that nobody else had done it, so I hope others find this useful :)

Thank you so much for doing this. I simply LOVE this song and Chagall too, so seeing this made my nite. Thank you again. :)

He's been one of my two favorite artists for ages, so when Tori did, in effect, a song about him, I was gobsmacked. And it's so beautiful, too.

Oh, I just love Chagall. And this post reminds me that I should definitely listen to more Tori.

He's one of my two favorite artists (Vermeer being the other...and actually, I should say one of three: I adore Nick Bantock).

Oh, Vermeer is amazing too. I love Hugo Simberg (a Finnish symbolist), Akseli Gallén-Kallela, Botticelli, Mucha, Dave McKean, and a lot of artists I've forgotten about... Gah. Too many amazing artists.

How cool that you did this! The idea had entered my mind a while back to look these up, but I never did anything about it. I'm glad you did. I bet hereinmyhead.com would love to link to you!

I've emailed the webmaster at your suggestion. I know I've been wanting just such a reference for quite some time, so others surely must be. And this is my favorite song of hers, in the end; it's mostly a labor of love!
